Assassin’s Creed Odyssey ‘s vast world, surprisingly engaging story, and stellar leveling system kept me entertained longer than any other single-player game that I experienced in 2018. As of this moment, I’m still looking for a reason to dive back in, and that might just result in me purchasing the game’s season pass sooner rather than later.

Like 2010, this year saw significant releases such as Celeste , which balanced ultra-difficult platforming with difficulty adjustment options and showed that platformers have the ability to tell a beautiful story about identity and mental health with nuance and respect. Frostpunk , however, released without as much attention even though it elevated the city-building genre to new and more complex heights. Frostpunk takes the experience of the totalitarian border inspector simulator Papers, Please and applies it to running an entire city in which the survival of hundreds is on the line and the biggest hurdle to success is the player’s morality and the sacrifices they are (and aren’t) willing to make. Both of these releases act as reminders that video games are fully capable of being art that tackle difficult subjects and do so with c

God of War wasn’t just my favorite game that I played in all of 2018, it’s now easily my favorite game of this console generation. While 2019 is looking great on paper, it’s going to take a whole lot to unseat Kratos from this throne.

Luckily, this weaker slate of games finally allowed me to return a bit more to my backlog and play some titles from past years that I’ve been putting off for far too long. Simultaneously, this lack of new games that interested me also led to me falling into a MOBA hole for the first time ever and folks, lemme tell ya, that ain’t a fun place to be at. Fortunately, as the year wraps up, I think I’ve finally figured out how to balance my newfound MOBA addiction while still playing plenty of other games that interest me. I’m in a good place in my gaming life heading into 2019, and I’m excited to see what this next year will bring.

pubg Missions has been one of the forerunners of the battle royale genre, building up the entire hype for the years to come. While the game has suffered a decline in its popularity since its launch, the developers are still actively working on bringing some interesting changes to the g

Changing your fire mode is great sometimes if you want to snipe enemies with single fire shots, but if you forget to change it back…you’re probably dead. Always keep an eye on your fire mode , it’s visible on every version of PUBG, so you don’t run into trou

While it might not be a major departure from its predecessor, Guacamelee! 2 is just a jolly video game that I adore. If you’re a fan of Metroidvania games whatsoever, make sure you get around to playing this one.

Practice looting as quickly as you can. Make a beeline for weapons, armor, and helmets , because everyone else in the little village you’ve dropped into is definitely doing that. This comes with practice: you’ll quickly learn which loot is worth it and what loot is

A lot of care seems to have been put on the menu presentation as if PUBG Corp. wants the player to believe that their experience has as high of a production value as its reputation implies. But entering the player lobby, surrounded by several more lifeless and personality-less moving mannequins, gives the impression that you’re still in some sort of mod. The frame rate stutters as the plane flies above the island, and although the game runs better on the ground, it never comes across as one dressed to impres

Minecraft seemingly took no time at all to establish itself as something special. The mechanics were accessible and nuanced, its simplistic art design quickly became iconic, and Minecraft’s truly open world let players both escape from the real world and create their own. It was a game that became attractive to all ages, especially to those who grew up with LEGO and had a fascination with build

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is still going strong after its 4-year anniversary, and although the Battle Royale market has been flooded with games ever since its release, there are still plenty of reasons to check out PUBG in 2021. Even if it’s to prepare for the release of PUBG 2, which is in development, by the w

God of War is my favorite action-adventure game since The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time . If you know my gaming tastes ( OoT is my favorite game ever made), then you understand how big of a statement that is coming from me.

While I do have some complaints and issues with the game from a critical perspective, those qualms are so easy to overlook thanks to fantastic combat and a swinging system that is easily the best gameplay mechanic of 2018. I think what excites me the most about Marvel’s Spider-Man though is that it feels like simply the first step in something much bigger, not just for Spider-Man, but for Marvel video games as a whole. I cannot wait to see what Insomniac does with the all-but-guaranteed sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man .
